The department Dynamics of Maritime Systems at TU Berlin possesses longtime experience in the experimental investigation of fully submerged and surface piercing propulsors. The cavitation tunnel K27 is the experimental facility mainly used for this purpose. It was build in 1967 by the renowned company Kempf und Remmers.

The facility is/was managed by:

Dr.-Ing. L. Birk until 2004

Dr.-Ing. J. Hinnenthal. until 2008

Special features

Special features of the K27 are the availability of free surface flow as well as the big stilling basin behind the test section. This allows for a homogeneous propeller inflow during free surface tests.

    • test section floor is adjustable in height

  • large test section

    • cross section: 1.0 m x 0.7 m, length 3.75 m
    • maximum flow velocity: 8.5 m/s
    • minimum cavitation number: 0.3
    • Simulation of ship wake fields using dummy models is possible

Measuring equipment

  • Propeller dynamometer H34

    • maximum thrust 3,600 N
    • maximum torque 180 Nm
    • maximum revolution speed 4,000 rpm
    • measurement of lateral forces possible

  • 3- and 6-axis force-torque sensor
  • 2C LDV  for measurement of flow velocities
