Prediction of Optimal Weather conditions for Offshore Operations

This research project focuses on the development and implementation of an experimentally validated decision support system for the identification of optimal weather conditions for offshore operations using deterministic motion prediction of the involved structures. For this purpose, the stochastic sea state is recorded by radar continuously at great distance up to the operational area. The evolution of the measured wave field is calculated by nonlinear, numerical methods to predict the wave sequences at the position of the offshore structures and to determine its associated motions subsequently.

The research project is divided into three work packages: sea state registration (WP1), sea state prediction (WP2) and motion prediction (WP3). The recording of the encountering wave field is focussed in WP1 (OceanWaveS), with special emphasis on small wave heights. Nonlinear methods are applied for the sea state prediction at the target location in WP2, based on the far field wave snapshots using NLS-methods. Finally, based on this forecasted wave sequence at target location, the body motions are predicted in WP3, using an advanced impulse response function (F2T+). As a result, the future body motions of the involved offshore structures are predicted to decide on offshore operations.

The program system to be developed will lead to more efficiency and safety concerning offshore operations, such as crane operation or helicopter landing, as favourable operation conditions can be identified fast and at short notice. Suitable wave sequences within unfeasible sea states as well as critical wave elevations in moderate sea conditions can be detected. The fundamental importance of such a prediction system is evident. State of the art methods are still depending on stochastic operation limits, which frequently result in serious, weather-related downtime.
